Azam Ali & Niyaz

In May of 2012 Niyaz will be releasing their third studio album entitled “Sumud”, translated from Arabic to mean “Steadfastness”.

Sumud is a philosophy rooted in the belief that every human being as a birthright should inherit the right to live with dignity and freedom upon the land on which they are born. Rising from the ashes of the 1967 war in Palestine when many Palestinians experienced forced expulsion from their homes and land, Sumud emerged among some who believed that freedom could never come from violent struggle. They believed that there could be a third way between passivity and violence, much in the same way that Gandhi, through methods of passive resistance led India to independence. By not succumbing to hatred and violence, one is able to maintain the dignity of life and the connection to ones culture through the preservation of hope, making it the most potent form of resistance.

Given that Niyaz draws its inspiration from the folk traditions of Iran and our surrounding cultures, we chose to use the concept of Sumud to reflect the common struggle among many of our minority groups, recognizing that many of our internal prejudices are deep rooted and exist within our own geographical borders.

It is our hope that with this project we are able to showcase some of the beauty and artistic contribution of these minority groups, who each hold an invaluable place in the evolution and preservation of their cultures, and in turn our human legacy. Their steadfastness in the pursuance of self-preservation, which often begged for immeasurable sacrifices, shows us that the human spirit can survive even under the most unjust economic and physical conditions.

Sumud will feature 10 folk songs from diverse parts of Iran, the Kurds from Turkey, Alevis fromTurkey, Dari speaking people from Afghanistan, and Palestinians from Palestine.
